GC5 clay gas cowl

The GC5 clay gas cowl can be fitted inside an existing chimney pot or you can have a new clay pot fitted to your chimney & then the GC5 is fitted to a pot. Used mainly on flues used for a gas fire.

Most chimneys have 2 flues. The other ones are now rarely used as these are connected to the upstairs bedroom chimney breast. Ventilation of these flues is recommended with either a pepper pot inserted into an existing pot or a 5" aluminium gas cowl & plate fitted to the chimney head. Otherwise you may get damp inside the flue and this can cause the mortar pointing to fall out of the chimney and also cause damp on the chimney breast inside your home. Also recommended to keep birds & squirrels out of the chimney!

We used granite to cover the chimney head & fix the pots, as this is strong and does not crack like normal mortar.

Chimney stack pointing & maintanance

The old mortar is scraped out of the brickwork on the chimney and the pointing is made good. Usually the tops, caubling & back of the chimney stack are the worst.

Flashing's & soakers are checked where the chimney stack goes through the roof & replaced or repaired with lead if necessary.

Sometimes a chimney may need rebuilding or even taking down.

We are always here to advise on the best method to fix your chimney problem also taking into consideration the cost.

NB A chimney stack covered with a concrete slab is not good practice as ventilation of the flues is important. Also removing the lower part of a chimney breast is also not advised as any water getting down the chimney will eventually end up inside your home.
