Black Country Museum
EPDM Rubber Membrane
The photo shows the flat roof we covered on the transport group offices at the Black Country Musem in Dudley, West Midlands on 4th November 2007.
The roof was originally covered with felt, the chipboard below was rotten and leaking.
We stripped the roof, changed the roof decking & insulation. We then covered the area with EPDM rubber and fitted upvc edge trims.
The EPDM rubber was fitted in a single piece 7.5m x 5m in size. The museum was closed for the day as the new plywood boards & epdm were lifted onto the roof by machine. Manouvering underneath the electric cables that power the trolley buses was quite difficult! We had to be very careful and switch off the power cables that the museum's trolly buses use.
Benefits over cost
The EPDM rubber membrane should have a life expectancy of over 40 yrs. This method is not always possible due to customers budget so we also offer flat roofing done with longer lasting high performance SBS & APP torch on felts, that are then either covered with a solar reflective paint or a coloured mineral felt.
Smaller bay roofs can be done in either felt, EPDM, lead or lead replacement. A new product that has no residual scrap value if stolen from your roof, but costs as much as lead.
Most people want a roof system that will last the longest, followed by the comment " But i dont want to spend much money." A difficult decision, as you probably also hear " You only get what you pay for."
All are true, but we usually come to a compromise that suits the customer!
Affordable Quality.
